How To Repair Lifting Laminate Floors

Nov 14, 2024Flooring

To repair a lifting laminate floor, you need to understand what’s causing the problem in the first place and use the right technique to address the cause.
1. Fix an Uneven Subfloor
If you’ve installed your laminate flooring over an uneven or uneven subfloor, you’ll need to level the subfloor before you can reinstall the flooring. To do this, lift up the lifted sections of the floor. Look at the subfloor underneath and inspect it for any raised or sunken areas. Using a sander or grinder, you can even out the surface. If you don’t have the right equipment to do this, call in local flooring experts to handle the tricky task of precision sanding and reinstalling.
Before you re-lay the laminate over the newly sanded surface, add a layer of underlayment to further hide any imperfections and use a block and mallet to place the floorboards back into their proper place.
2. Repairing Moisture Damage
If the boards absorb excess moisture, they can swell and take up more space, causing them to lift off the floor. The first thing you need to do is look for the source of the water – this could be a leak in the ceiling or wall, or it could simply be excess moisture in the house.
A professional can help you locate the source of moisture if you can’t find it. Once the root problem has been fixed, you can remove the parts of the floor that have lifted and add a moisture-resistant underlayment to prevent excess moisture from seeping in.
3. Fix a Missing Expansion Joint
If you didn’t leave an expansion gap before, then you’ll need to remove all the boards and cut them to include an expansion gap of about ¼ inch. This can be a big task, so calling in professionals to handle this flooring renovation job may be in your best interest.
4. Consider Installing New Flooring
Most of these solutions involve a lot of work. While you may have the time or even the skill, it’s a lot of work that requires close attention to detail and benefits from the flooring specialists’ years of experience and expertise. You should consider calling FGL Flooring and asking for new flooring to be installed to avoid DIY mistakes and get beautiful, long-lasting floors.
Contact the Experts
While you may be tempted to fix the problem on your own, sometimes the job is more extensive than it seems and you can benefit from finding a trusted and experienced local specialist to identify the problem and nip it in the bud.
