Mistakes When Laying Tiles

Oct 10, 2024Flooring

When we want to renovate the floor at home to change or improve our environment, we often take the risk ourselves to avoid extra expenses. However, we must bear in mind that this can cause problems. A poorly placed piece can damage the results and in the end you spend more on fixing than on changing.
Here we are going to tell you the main mistakes that are made when laying tiles and how to avoid them so that it does not end in disaster.

Not leveling as one of the mistakes when laying tiles
One of the tools that cannot be missing is a good ceramic leveler and measuring the piece and the floor well. If you do not measure well, you will end up paying dearly for the error both in functionality and aesthetics. A poorly placed tile ends up damaged and with an ugly appearance. Taking care of the leveling will increase its durability and make it easier to clean.

Not selecting the correct adhesive
When we install a new floor, we must bear in mind that each material needs a different adhesive. A ceramic piece with high porosity is not the same as one with little porosity. Not choosing the right adhesive is one of the most common mistakes when laying tiles.
If we don’t choose the right one, the tiles will have bubbles or air pockets, which will reduce their resistance to impacts, as they will be fragile. The correct way is to apply the adhesive with a notched trowel.

Not choosing the right format
Another very common mistake is not choosing the right format. You should measure the floor well and choose the number of pieces that will go according to that measurement.
Generally, the tiles are 30×30. The most important thing after measuring them is to place them using double gluing, never single gluing. If you do it well, you won’t have any problems.

If you have extra space between the tiles
If you have extra space between the tiles, you haven’t measured the pieces well, so it’s important to measure it well. It’s also very common that as a result of the gaps that remain, pieces of tiles get stuck in. This is another serious mistake when laying tiles. In addition to not looking good aesthetically, the resistance of the pieces will decrease and therefore their quality.

Placing tiles in batches is another of the errors in the placement of tiles
One of the most common ways of placing tiles is with the dot technique. Although for many it is an easy and simple method, the reality is that this simplicity will have repercussions in the future. Placing tiles with this technique means that bubbles come out easily, increasing the probability of breakages.

The solution to one of the most typical errors in the placement of tiles is to be aware that we need a minimum of 80% moisture to properly fix the pieces. This is achieved by applying a thick layer on medium-high porosity tiles, and applying a thin layer using a notched trowel on low porosity tiles.
