Installing new flooring can completely change the look of your space. The right flooring will improve the look and functionality of your home and will also be very attractive to future buyers. Before you do the work of removing old flooring and installing new flooring, you need to prepare.
Here are some tips on what to do before installing flooring.
Select Your Flooring
The type of flooring you choose will affect what you need to do before a renovation. For example, if you are installing new hardwood, you will need to remove existing flooring or in some cases you can skip this step.
Contact a Contractor
Get several quotes from professional installers and choose the right person for the job. Having a contractor appointed to install your new flooring will give you an idea of timelines and help you prepare for the work ahead. Of course, you should skip this step if you choose to do your kitchen flooring renovation yourself.
Measure and Order
Once you have your flooring chosen, measure your kitchen to see how much material you need. Measure several times, as any skilled carpenter would, to ensure that your measurements are accurate.
Waste Disposal Plan
Most garbage removal companies won’t take certain items unless you ask them to. Call your garbage removal company to see if they’ll take your old flooring. If not, rent a dumpster from a garbage removal company, otherwise you’ll be left with the remains of your old flooring.
Clean Up
Remove items from the kitchen that might interfere with the renovation. If you’re also replacing cabinets, you should remove all items from the kitchen. However, if you’re only replacing flooring, remove the dining table and chairs, as well as the refrigerator and dishwasher.
Contain Dust
Hang plastic sheeting over doors to prevent dust generated by the renovation from reaching other areas of the house. Make sure you have an exit to the kitchen by cutting a vertical opening in the middle of one door casing. When you’re working, cover the opening with duct tape to contain dust. You can also buy plastic sheeting at your local hardware store that has a zipper down the middle.
You can also put down plastic sheeting or drop cloth from your kitchen to where you plan to dispose of waste.
Cover The Basement
If you have a basement under your kitchen, put down drop cloths over everything in that space. All the hammering and work you’ll be doing on your kitchen floor could result in dust and debris falling from the basement ceiling. Covering things up beforehand will make cleanup much easier later.
